Forest Schools

We are delighted to announce that Horsham Nursery School became a Recognised Forest School Provider in March 2024 under the leadership of Becky Somers, our Forest School Lead.

In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks – John Muir

Forest School is a unique educational experience originating from Denmark that offers children the opportunity to succeed and develop confidence through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland environment. Children engage in motivating and achievable tasks throughout the year and in almost all weathers.

Forest School is led by a Level 3 certified leader who is adaptable to the children’s emerging needs and interests. Regular sessions take place in our private Forest School site for all ages. The children explore nature art, bug hunts, develop balance on climbing opportunities, use tools, cook on fires, build habitats, grow vegetables and so much more! The benefits of Forest School are endless, but to name a few:

  • Builds resilience, confidence and independence
  • Supports problem solving and risk taking
  • Develops empathy for others and wildlife
  • Improves concentration and attention
  • Supports emotional and mental wellbeing
  • Encourages sensory exploration
  • Improves sleep
  • Develops a sense of curiosity and pride
  • Provides opportunities to self-motivate and the freedom to explore their interests

Exploring all types of weathers and seasons first hand is an important aspect of Forest School because it helps children to develop their senses and create the best memories! Splashing in puddles, dancing in the rain, noticing frost, listening to the crunching leaves, feeling the wind on our face and enjoying the warmth of the sunshine.

The children are also supported in taking manageable risks through tool work, cooking on fires and climbing opportunities. Staff members support the children where necessary and encourage independence where it is safe to do so. Children enjoy making medals using the bow saw and palm drill, while others make cars using the hammer. The children also help collect sticks for the campfire, use flint and steel to light the fire and then cook some yummy snacks (for example crumpets, toffee apples, pancakes and popcorn).
